The pressure when your heart beats
The pressure between heartbeats
Blood pressure is recorded as two numbers. Systolic (the top number) measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. Diastolic (the bottom number) measures the pressure between beats.
A normal reading is below 120/80 mmHg. Readings between 120–129 systolic with less than 80 diastolic are considered elevated. Hypertension Stage 1 begins at 130/80.
A reading above 180/120 is a hypertensive crisis. Seek emergency care immediately if you have this reading along with symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, or vision changes.
