Understand how your body fat distribution relates to your health risk.
Waist-to-hip ratio compares the circumference of your waist to that of your hips. It is used as a proxy for abdominal obesity, which is more closely linked to cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes than overall body weight.
According to the World Health Organization, a WHR above 0.90 in men and above 0.85 in women indicates abdominal obesity and is associated with substantially increased metabolic risk.
Measure your waist at the narrowest point, typically just above the navel. Measure your hips at the widest point around the buttocks. Stand relaxed with feet together when measuring.
